Digital signature (Certificado Digital) and the Mercurio platform: A complete guide to remote legalization in 2026

In Spain, there are two worlds: the “world of queues”, where you need to catch an appointment for months (cita previa), and the “world of Mercurio”, where all issues are resolved in 15 minutes, without leaving the couch. To get into the second one, you vitally need a digital signature.

1. What is Certificado Digital (Your “key” to everything)

Digital signature (Certificado Digital) is not just a picture of your stroke. This is a complex cryptographic certificate file that is installed in your computer’s browser. It legally confirms that it is you who perform the actions on the Internet.

Why you can’t do without it in 2026:

  • Applying for a residence permit within Spain: Digital nomad visa and many other types of residences are submitted exclusively electronically through this signature.
  • Saving time: With a certificate you do not need to take cita previa(record) and physically go to the offices of migration, tax or social insurance.
  • Access to personal data: You can download a registration certificate at any time, check your pension contributions or find out the status of your case.
  • Legal significance: Documents signed by this certificate have the same force as those signed with a pen on paper in the presence of a notary.

2. What is the Mercurio platform?

Mercurio is a specialized government platform for submitting documents for a residence permit (residence permit).

  • How it works: You go to the site, log in using your digital signature, upload scans of documents (contracts, police clearance certificates, insurance) and click “send”.
  • Main advantage (Resguardo): Immediately after sending, the system issues you an official receipt with the case number and filing date. In Spain, this document (Resguardo) protects you: if your current legal status (for example, a tourist visa) expires while the case is pending, you have the right to stay in the country legally based on this receipts.
  • Deadlines: By law, when applying through Mercurio for certain types of residence permits (for example, for nomads), the state is obliged to respond within 20 working days.

3. Detailed instructions for receiving (FNMT)

The most popular certificate is issued by the Royal Mint of Spain (FNMT). The acquisition process consists of several strict steps.

Step 1: Technical Preparation (Very Important!)

The FNMT system is very sensitive to settings.

  • One device rule: The entire process from application to final download must take place on the same computer, in the same browser and under the same user.
  • Software: You need to go to the FNMT website and download Configurador FNMT. Without this program, your browser will not be able to create a “key”.

Step 2: Request a code on the site

  1. Go to the section Persona Física and select “Obtener Certificado software”.
  2. Enter your number NIE, last name and email address.
  3. A letter with a nine-digit code will be sent to your mail.Be sure to save its is your ID for the next step.

Step 3: Identity Verification (Personal Visit)

The government must ensure that it is the NIE holder who receives the certificate.

  1. You need to find the registration office (Oficina de Registro). Most often this is the local city hall (Ayuntamiento), tax office (Hacienda) or social insurance (Seguridad Social).
  2. Make an appointment there (cita previa), selecting the category “Certificado Digital” or “Firma” Electrónica”.
  3. Come with your passport, your NIE and the code from Step 2. The official will confirm your identity in the database.

Step 4: Install the certificate

  1. After your visit to the office, you will receive a link to your email download.
  2. Go to the same FNMT page again on same computer.
  3. Enter the code and download the file. The system will prompt you to create a backup copy – make it and save it to a flash drive. If the computer breaks down, you will have to re-create the certificate without a copy.

4. Analysis of difficult moments

  • Download error: If you updated your browser or cleared the cache between the 2nd and 4th steps, the certificate will not be installed. You’ll have to start all over again.
  • NIE and certificate: You cannot get a certificate for a regular passport. For the FNMT system, a number is required NIE.
  • Validity period: The certificate for individuals is usually valid 4 years, after which it can be renewed online (if it is still has not expired).

Why do professionals file documents through “Lawyer Access”?

Although you can file documents through Mercurio yourself, lawyers and attorneys have special “collective certificates”.

Tip from an expert: When When submitted through a professional channel, the migration service often considers cases faster, since the documents are previously checked by a specialist. In addition, if the migration service requests additional paper (requerimiento), the lawyer will receive a notification instantly in the electronic account, which eliminates the risk of losing the letter in a regular mailbox.

Do you want to simplify your legalization? We will complete the submission of documents through Mercurio on a turnkey basis, monitoring every stage of your case.

How to obtain a driver’s license in Spain in 2026: A complete guide to replacement and training

Digital signature (Certificado Digital) and the Mercurio platform: A complete guide to remote legalization in 2026

The issue of mobility in Spain is acute: in many regions, a comfortable life without a car is almost impossible. The process of obtaining or replacing a license (Permiso de Conducir) is regulated by the General Directorate for Road Safety (DGT).

In this guide, we will look at whether it is possible to simply “exchange” your old rights and what to do if the pr

1. Is it possible to replace rights acquired outside the EU?

The process of exchanging rights is called Canje de permisos. The possibility of replacement depends on the existence of an agreement between Spain and the country that issued your license.

  • EU and EEA countries: The exchange takes place automatically, without exams.
  • Countries with bilateral agreements:(For example, Argentina, Colombia, Ukraine, Serbia, etc.) – exchange is possible, sometimes you only need to pass a theoretical test or a practical exam for certain categories.
  • Other countries (including the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, etc.): For 2026, there are often no direct agreements on simplified exchange for citizens of these countries (who do not have EU citizenship). This means that you will have to get your license again by going through a driving school.

Important rule: You cannot exchange your license if you received it in your country after you became a legal resident Spain.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions. By law, to obtain a driving license in Spain you are required to have legal status.

  • You must have a resident card (TIE) or be an EU citizen with registration (NIE).
  • Students with a study visa are also eligible as they are in the country legally for more than 185 days a year.
  • Persons awaiting a decision on a residence permit usually cannot be admitted to the exams until an official positive decision is received.

3. Detailed plan: How to get a license from scratch

The process consists of four main stages.

Step 1: Choosing a driving school (Autoescuela)

You can study on your own, but for practical lessons and the exam in the city you will still need a driving school. On average, registration (matricula) costs from 100€ to 300€.

Step 2: Medical examination (Psicotécnico)

You need to take the test at a specialized center (Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores). They check vision, hearing and coordination (test on a special simulator).

  • Cost: 35€ – 60€.
  • Result: You are given a certificate that is valid for 90 days to submit to the DGT.

Step 3: Theoretical Exam (Teórico)

You need to answer 30 questions in 30 minutes. No more than 3 errors are allowed.

  • The exam can be taken in Spanish or English(in some regions – in French or German).
  • State fees DGT: About 95€ (gives two attempts for both exams in total).

Step 4: Practical exam (Práctico)

Only after passing the theory you are allowed to drive. The exam lasts about 25 minutes and includes:

  1. Component check: The inspector may ask to show where the washer reservoir is located or how to turn on the fog lights.
  2. Autonomous driving: The first 10 minutes you drive along any route (or according to the instructions “drive towards the center”).
  3. Driving according to instructions: The rest of the time the inspector gives commands.

4. How much does training cost?

The total amount greatly depends on the number of practical classes (classes de conducir). One lesson (45-60 min) costs on average 25€ – 40€.

Item of expenses Approximate cost
Registration in driving school 200€
Medical examination 50€
Fee DGT 95€
Practical lessons (20 lessons) 600€
Driving test (school fee) 50€ – 100€
TOTAL ~1000€ – 1200€

5. Useful tips for beginners

  1. Learn theory using applications: The most popular application is TodoTest. The questions on the real exam will be identical to those you will find in the application.
  2. Replacing rights through a lawyer: If your country is on the list of countries with an agreement (Canje), it is better to entrust the process to a professional. It will help you register correctly for cita(it’s extremely difficult to catch an appointment) and verify the authenticity of your license through the consulate.
  3. L (Novato): After receiving your license, you are required to drive with an “L” sticker for a whole year (green on a white background) in the upper left corner of the rear window.

Getting a license in Spain is a journey that requires patience, but it is fully justified by the freedom of movement.
