Libro de Familia in Spain: what is it and how to get it

If you are planning to live in Spain as a family or are expecting the birth of a child, you will inevitably come across the concept of Libro de Familia(Family book). This is an official document issued by the Spanish Ministry of Justice and serves to register family ties between spouses, as well as between parents and children.
1. What is Libro de Familia?
Libro de Familia is a small book (in recent years actively replaced by digital records), in which all significant civil acts of the family are entered:
- Registration marriage.
- Birth of children.
- Adoption.
- Divorce or separation.
- Death of family members.
Important: Since 2021, Spain has to a system of individual digital records. Now, instead of a physical “blue book”, new families receive an electronic extract from the Civil Registry (Registro Civil). However, the old paper books remain valid and continue to be used.
2. Why is it needed and what does it provide?
You will need this document for almost any administrative procedure in Spain:
- Completing documents for a child: Obtaining the first medical card (TSI) and enrollment in school.
- Social benefits: Registration of the status of a large family (Familia Numerosa) or receiving child care benefits.
- Identity card: Obtaining the first DNI or passport for child.
- Labor rights: Maternity leave or child care leave at work.
- Inheritance: Confirmation of relationship upon entry into inheritance.
3. How to get Libro de Familia?
The receiving process is initiated automatically upon the occurrence of the first “family event” in Spain.
Method A: At the birth of a child
This is the most common case for foreigners.
- B maternity hospital: After the birth, the hospital issues a medical certificate of birth.
- Registration: Parents must register the child at the local office Registry Civil(usually within 8 days).
- Issue: After making an entry in the registry, you will be issued a Libro de Familia (or digital certificate of registration), where the child will be listed as your dependent.
Method B: When registering a marriage
If you are officially registering a marriage in Spain (through the mayor’s office or the court), the Libro de Familia is issued immediately after the ceremony as confirmation of your new civil status.
4. Terms and cost
- How much does it cost: Issuing Libro de Familia is an absolutely free public service. If someone demands money from you for the book itself, it is illegal. Only the services of translators or lawyers are paid if you engage them to help collect documents.
- How long does it take to complete:
- When registering a marriage – issued on the day of registration.
- At the birth of a child – the process takes from several days to a couple of weeks, depending on the workload of your Registro Civil.
5. Is it recognized in other countries?
This is an important nuance for foreigners:
- Within the EU: Libro de Familia is an internal Spanish document. In most European countries, to confirm your relationship, you will be asked not for a “book”, but for a International Birth Certificate(Certificado de Nacimiento) or a Marriage Certificate.
- Outside the EU (including CIS countries): The book is almost never recognized as an independent document. For use abroad, you will always need to request a separate Certificate (Acta/Certificado) from the Registro Civil, affix an Apostille on it and make a translation.
6. What to do if the book is lost?
If you have lost the paper version, you need to contact the same Registro Civil where it was issued and request a duplicate. You will need to present your parents’ passports and, preferably, know the date of registration of marriage or birth of children.
Summary for parents: Libro de Familia is your main “family passport” in Spain. It opens doors to schools, clinics and government services.
Expert Tip: Despite the transition to a digital format, always keep a paper copy or PDF of the certificate in an accessible place. When applying for citizenship of a child after a year of his life in Spain (if he was born here), this document will become one of the key evidence of your right to preferential legalization.
